Depending on where I am and who I am with, I can become a completely different person. Once, I found myself alone in a place where no one knew me, suddenly freed from the gaze of others. The gaze directed toward someone, the prejudices I had carried for years, certain desires, and the self-loathing attached to those desires—all of it fell away, and I felt free. For someone who longed for freedom, a place without judgment, obsession, or measurement seemed ideal. And yet, even there, I began to miss the place where those very prejudices were born. It is contradictory, but I cannot become an entirely different person. Those two selves overlap and form a single organism. Standing between them feels raw and awkward, but in the end, the self that exists between them becomes something almost transcendent.
